McCusker named All-South Atlantic Conference honorable mention

Pilgrim alumna Haley McCusker proved to be a quick study on the lacrosse field this spring, as the freshman helped Coker College make significant strides in the program’s second season of competition.

After finishing the 2014 campaign with a 3-10 mark, the Cobras improved by leaps and bounds in 2015, winning six more games than last season and earning the team’s first South Atlantic Conference tournament berth.

McCusker instantly established herself as one of the key attacking threats for Coker, finishing fourth on the team with 32 goals, a tally that included five-goal hauls against Newberry, Lincoln Memorial and Erskine.

The former Patriot also contributed 11 assists and picked up 54 ground balls, the latter placing her second on the Cobras.

The promising start to McCusker’s intercollegiate career netted her conference-wide recognition for her on-field exploits, as she was named honorable mention All-South Atlantic Conference alongside three of her Coker teammates.

At the end of the regular season, the Cobras finished with an 8-7 record and earned the sixth and final seed in the SAC tournament, setting up a quarterfinal matchup with third-seeded Tusculum.

Coker proved that its 12-8 victory over the Pioneers earlier in the season was no fluke, with the Cobras pouncing on their prey, 12-10, with McCusker assisting on one of the goals.

However, the clock hit midnight in the semifinals for Coker courtesy of a 21-5 shellacking by Lenior-Rhyne that marked the third time in as many meetings that the Bears scored at least 20 goals.

Despite the unbalanced result of the final game of the season, it is clear that the building blocks are in place for McCusker and the Cobras to enjoy future success on the lacrosse field.

Pair of Warwick natives take the hill for RIC

There were diverging fortunes on the hill for a pair of Warwick natives on the Rhode Island College pitching staff over the last week, as one was rocked while the other rolled.

Warwick Vets graduate Dan Greaves got the call for the Anchormen in their April 23 meeting versus Framingham State, lasting 3.2 innings before being relieved, as RIC was downed by the Rams by a 16-10 score.

Greaves picked up his first loss of the season after surrendering eight runs and 11 hits, including a solo home run by Framingham State’s Matthew Gerard in the second inning.

Two days later, it was the turn of former Toll Gate standout Dylan Cummiskey, as he faced Western Connecticut State in the front end of a doubleheader.

The ex-Titan shined as he tossed a complete game, scattering six hits and striking out seven Colonial batters en route to a 16-1 rout in favor of the Anchormen, improving his record to 5-1 in the process.

Going the distance is nothing new for Cummiskey; the performance marked the third time this season that he has hurled a complete game, one more than the rest of the RIC pitching corps put together.
