McDonnell headlines three Pats’ All-Division selections

The Pilgrim softball team is 11-3 during the regular season, so it’s encountered plenty of success this spring.

And on Tuesday, its season got that much better, as three players were tabbed All-Division selections, while one more earned an honorable mention.

Highlighting that list was senior captain Ellen McDonnell. McDonnell may conclude her four seasons with arguably the best career of any Pilgrim softball player up until this point.

McDonnell, who played shortstop this season to help her team, was acknowledged for her play this season, earning Second Team All-State, First Team All-Division and Academic All-State honors.

She eclipsed the 100-hit mark for her career in a game at Narragansett this season, and has driven in 12 runs and scored 15 more. But the most impressive stat that McDonnell possesses is the fact that she hasn’t struck out in 59 plate appearances, getting rung up just five times for her career.

Centerfielder and leadoff hitter, Madison Balutowski, was named Second Team All-Division after a season in which the junior hit .404 at the dish, while driving in 10 runs, scoring 16 and swiping eight bags.

Freshman catcher Olivia King was named a Third-Team All-Division selection after registering 21 RBIs, a freshman school record according to head coach Bill Aquilante, and catching every inning of every game.

Sophomore pitcher Morgan Almon was tabbed an honorable mention, despite her statistics suggesting that she deserved something greater.

Almon hit .356 this season with an on-base percentage of .491, to go along with a record of 9-3 in the circle, compiling an ERA of 2.83 and striking out 80 hitters in 82 innings pitched.

Pats, Titans bow out of state tournament qualifier

The Toll Gate and Pilgrim golf teams earned a spot in a state tournament qualifier on Tuesday, placing fourth and fifth in their division, respectively, this season.

The Pats and Titans entered the qualifier with Cranston West at Cranston Country Club, as the Falcons earned third place for the season.

The three teams battled it out for a spot in the upcoming state championship.

Unfortunately, the Pats and Titans both fell short, as West ran away with the match to earn the third divisional spot for states.

West edged Toll Gate by 16 strokes, with the Falcons shooting a 173 and the Titans a 189.

The Pats were far off the pace at 219.

The Titans earned a spot in the qualifier after an 8-6 season, while the Pats just edged out West Warwick for fifth place with a 6-8 record.

Hendricken will now serve as the only Warwick team in the 15-team state final, which is set for May 26-27 at Cranston Country Club.

The Hawks went a perfect 14-0 this season, in addition to capturing the prestigious Challenge Cup.

Knights lead Region XXI championship by 30 strokes after day one

The CCRI golf team is competing at the Region XXI championship at New England Country Club in Bellingham, Mass., this week, and it’s off to a good start.

The Knights built a 30-stroke lead over the field after day one of play on Tuesday.

CCRI was led by established sophomore Steven Letterle and Alex Greenwood, as each shot a 77.

Josh Macera also shot an 80 for the Knights, while Matt Burke shot an 86 and Mike Higgins a 91.

CCRI had a team score of 320 after day one, which gave it a substantial lead.

Dean College was in second with a score of 350 and Massasoit was in third with a 392.

The Knights were looking to build on their lead during day two on Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time.
