Meeting tomorrow for those considering being foster parents

Many Rhode Island children need a home, children who too often have been traumatized by abuse and other family issues making it unsafe to remain with their parents.

“These boys and girls need safe loving homes so they may heal, develop and grow,” said Family Service of Rhode Island CEO Margaret Holland McDuff. “Many Rhode Islanders have become dedicated foster parents, but many more are needed.”

An opportunity to learn about foster parenting takes place Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Family Service of Rhode Island’s office at 134 Thurbers Ave. in Providence. A number of current foster parents will be available to answer questions about the experience of foster parenting. Staff will explain the weekly financial stipend and other aspects of foster parenting.  Free, off-street parking is available and refreshments will be served.

Longtime foster parent Lynne Bates of Tiverton will be at the event to talk to potential foster parents.

“For 12 years, our journey has taken us to many places. It has taught our biological children to love ‘big,’ to accept, and to be grateful for family in all its capacity,” she said. “It’s shown me that we can help others and give children of all ages an opportunity to experience life in a safe and healthy environment.”

Bates praised Family Service of Rhode Island for their support.

“Through the years, Family Service staff has been a team providing constant support and availability. It has enhanced our experience providing us the ability to be successful. They will always be considered part of our family.”

Any adult over 25 is eligible to be considered for Family Service of RI’s foster care program, whether married or single, homeowner or an apartment renter. More information is available at www.familyserviceri.org, by calling 331-1350 ext. 3305, or by e-mailing foster care recruiter Greg Wright at wrightgr@familyserviceri.org.
