Memorial to a special house

Posted

Yesterday, April 16, the house my kids grew up in was taken down by the Airport. Krista Kerr from W.D. Schock was great to work with and we were very happy with the whole process of the sale and acquisition, but it still hurts a bit to see the land leveled and every trace removed. Gives a whole new meaning to “you can never go home again”! The following is my “memorial” to a great house and Warwick neighborhood.

Kathy Davenport

THE HOUSE ON BRUNSWICK

There used to be a house on Brunswick

“Round the corner from Normandy Drive,

A family with 7 children,

There they learned to laugh and love and thrive.

One by one they grew up and moved on with their lives.

But this house they would always call home,

But the places we hold dear down here on earth,

Are only really on loan.

Yesterday was the last day the big house stood proud,

Today was the day of her demise,

Big machines came and took her down piece by piece,

But even they couldn’t break the ties.

For the love and laughter and memories,

Of life well lived in that place.

Can’t be confined or defined or contained,

By bricks and wood and space.

Yes, it’s sad in a way but I have no regrets,

The house served its purpose well.

It was a blessing from God for a time set aside,

And will live on in the tales we’ll re-tell.

Editor’s note: Kathy and Richard Davenport moved to South Carolina in 2007 not in anticipation of selling their home to the Rhode Island Airport Corporation but because of retirement.
