In a press conference Thursday afternoon at the Warwick Police Station, Major Christine Kelley and Captain Christopher Stewart announced two suspects, Richard Baribault, 40, of 20 Messer St., Warwick and Troy Gunderway, 44, of 82 Church Ave., Warwick, were arraigned and held without bail for the murder of Fernando “Captain Fredy” Silva, 70.
Silva’s body was found on his boat on August 15 after Harbormaster Jeff Baris investigated a smell on the boat.
Silva was considered missing as early as August 1. He had last been seen by family in late July.
Stewart said officers were led to the two suspects through “good police work,” retracing the final days of Fredy’s life to discern what had occurred.
Silva, an “avid Keno player,” is believed to have won several hundred dollars on the night of his alleged murder, thought to have transpired on Aug. 2.
It is believed that the two individuals had planned on assaulting and robbing Silva. Both were charged with 1st degree murder and conspiracy.
Both suspects have extensive criminal records. Baribault has had several charges brought against him for domestic violence, assault, shoplifting, driving with a suspended license, possession of a knife exceeding three inches, violation of both a no contact and protective order, disorderly conduct and theft.
Gunderway has been charged with several counts of theft, possession of stolen goods, breaking an entering, disorderly conduct, DUI, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana and obstructing a police officer.
Both Kelley and Stewart said the case is an ongoing investigation and could not elaborate further.
