Michael Corvino: From Puccini to Woody Allen

Posted

Michael Corvino began his operatic career in 1997, gaining fame for his baritone voice at the Metropolitan Opera and the Chicago Lyric and singing opera all over the United States, Europe and Asia.

Recently, he has shared that voice with Broadway musical audiences, winning praise from the New York Times for his role as Tony Esposito in “The Most Happy Fella.”

Corvino is now touring the country as Nick Valenti, the mob boss who sets his mole up for a leading role in Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway,” coming to the Providence Performing Arts Center May 31 through June 5.

“Opera and musical theatre aren’t that different as art forms,” Corvino told me. “It’s the same type of vocal form, and I’ve found it a breath of fresh air in my career.”

I reminded him that baritones play the bad guys in opera, and he’s doing the same in “Bullets Over Broadway.

“Yes, but it’s a great role,” he said. “I get to sing and play an interesting character. I grew up in an Italian household, so the words come easy in Italian opera. Nick is a lot of fun to play.”

Corvino grew up in the Bronx and attended Catholic school, going on to Queens College, where he developed his love for opera.

“I’ve never been to Providence, but I’ve heard so much about the Italian restaurants on Federal Hill, I can’t wait to get there,” he said. “I have a passion for food, especially Italian, and I enjoy cooking, using my grandmother’s recipes.”

Michael is with the show through July 3. He is booked in “Girl of the Golden West” in Denver this coming October and November.

“I love being on the road and playing in different cities, especially when I’m there for a week or more and have a chance to explore the sights and restaurants,” he said.

“I’ve had an opportunity to spend time in Hong Kong and Alaska. I’m truly blessed to be doing what I’m doing.”

“Bullets Over Broadway: The Musical” will be at the Providence Performing Arts Center from May 31 to June 5. For reservations call 421-ARTS.
