Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention partnering up with local YMCA Cranston

The Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention opened in April 2013. Founded by Dr. Lyle Micheli, Director of the Division of Sports Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital, The Micheli Center uses evidence-based strategies to reduce risk of injury in athletes while enhancing individual sports performance. Personal programs are developed to prevent athletes from obtaining injuries in their sport, to be able to play longer and safer.

For each individual athlete to be successful a work out regime is essential. The Micheli Center is partnering with YMCA Greater Providence-Cranston, in Cranston, so athletes from all over New England can train and fulfill their individual program prescription for injury prevention at their local YMCA.

Personal Injury Risk Profiles are at the core of The Micheli Center’s operations. After going through an extensive fitness evaluation, clients meet with a board-certified Sports Medicine physician and are provided with an individualized prescription outlining steps they can take to minimize their risk of sports injuries.

Concussion Prevention Programs offer athletes a comprehensive description of concussive brain injury and its occurrence in sports. Athletes learn about their own personal risk of injury, receive instructions on how to reduce their risk of sustaining a sport-related concussion, baseline testing, computerized measurements of their brain function, standardized assessments of their balance, and guidance on how to play their sports safely.

The Running Program at The Micheli Center assists healthy runners of all ages and skill levels who seek a multidisciplinary analysis of running style, gait, distance, age, competition level, and more to determine an individualized injury risk profile.

Specialty Programs to develop sports injury prevention plans for dancers, figure skaters, throwing athletes and more are also available.

Coach and Community Clinics are informational sessions for those currently involved in coaching, athletic training, strength and conditioning, or parenting young athletes. During these clinics The Micheli Center team reviews the most current research in the fields of sports medicine, injury prevention, and performance training.

Personal Training sessions to ensure proper technique when fulfilling the prescriptions received at The Micheli Center will be led by certified professionals who specialize in training children and young adults. Both one-on-one sessions and small session with groups of 2-10 customers are offered.

“The YMCA is an ideal partner, as they are respected, reliable, and available to everyone,” said Dr. William P. Meehan III, Director of The Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention. “Together, we hope to make athletics safer, while continuing to encourage exercise and sports participation for everyone.”
