Misinformed on Apponaug hotel

To the Editor:

Once again, the public has been misinformed on the subject of the proposed hotel to be constructed on Station Street, on the outskirts of Apponaug Center.

Mr. D’Abate is quoted in the front-page article of the Beacon’s January 12 issue as saying, “Since our meeting, there has been nothing but positive feedback from the community.”

Mr. D’Abate should check his sources. There is a small possibility that one couple on Dory Road may find it a good addition to the community” to quote Mayor Avedisian. I repeat myself: One couple may benefit!

An honest poll of the neighborhood tells quite a different story. One I hope to see in print on the front page, but would settle if it makes it to the “Letters to the Editor” column.

In no way does “boutique’ mean anything but small. Check with Webster’s. In what alternate universe is a six-story, 127-room convention hotel to be construed as boutique? Please quote even one occupant of this neighborhood as supporting the construction of this proposed monstrosity. I challenge Mr. D’Abate and Mayor Avedisian to back up these disingenuous statements with facts.

Perhaps Mr. D’Abate had hearing problems when the words “we don’t want you here” were spoken at the meeting to which the article refers.

Diverting the river water combining with the cove water to provide a habitat for a large variety of wildlife will improve things exactly how? I fail to see how flushing the hotel’s toilets will benefit the swans, egret, ducks, geese and many additional forms of wildlife now enjoying the unique habitat provided by the existing conditions.

Is this bookend hotel really expected to inspire out-of-town partiers to flock to beautiful downtown Apponaug to spend their quality time? Or will we see an influx of “ladies of the evening” imported to entertain the expected conventioneers? I ask merely because encountering other convention hotel goers in lobbies and elevators has left me feeling somewhat less than enchanted.

When the shovels hit Station Street in the coming season, 96 Dory Road, will be the first location to display a for sale sign. I doubt that it will be the last.

    While I sympathize with Ms. Vosselman there is a simple solution: Pool the resources of your neighbors and buy the land slated for the hotel. If not, that swath of Dory Rd. will eventually make a nice condo development.

    Boutique=Expensive/Overpriced.

    1. I ask again: what are the occupancy numbers for Warwick's other hotels? Do they justify building another hotel in a saturated market, especially an upscale one whose price will discourage locals from putting up family and friends there?

    2. If conventions don't come to the existing Providence Convention Center (wired for slot machines when it was built), what makes anyone think they'll come to Warwick?

    3. Do area residents want to deal with the crowd from, say, a science fiction or cosplay convention if one came? They'll have no say in the type of convention in their backyard.

    Area residents will be the first to suffer from this boondoggle.

    Your friends and family can stay at Motel 6, but the clientele there might not like that kind of low lifes hanging around.

    Justanidiot, it never ceases to amuse me when I read the type of comments that folks like you come up with online; ignoramuses like yourself love the computer age because you can hide in the dark behind a keyboard- you would never dare to say the remarks you make to anyone's face because you'd get tipped over.

    At least work on your grammar and composition skills if you can get get yourself out of a bottle long enough and pry yourself off the barstool where you hang out and tell anyone who will still listen to your stories about how clever you are.
