Friends and family of the late local musician David Jackvony will hold a fundraiser in his memory Sunday, July 19 at 2 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Smithfield.

Jackvony, a lifelong Pawtucket resident, was a longstanding member, lead vocalist and keyboard player of the highly acclaimed Rhode Island doo wop group, Reminisce. Jackvony passed away at age 50 on May 25 while on a cruise in Bermuda with the band.

Jack Mento, lead vocalist for Reminisce, has nothing but praise for his fellow bandmate. Jackvony was 21 years old when he joined Reminisce, becoming the first musician the band had hired.

“David was four men in one with the talent he had as a musician. He could sing bass, play bass on the keyboard with his left hand, while playing chords with his right hand,” said Mento. “He was a great guy. We called him the ‘Gentle Giant.’ We miss him very much.”

The proceeds raised at this event will help the family with funeral and repatriation expenses and celebrate Jackvony’s life.

This all-day event will feature more than 19 bands, local celebrities, raffles and appearances by former Reminisce members.

“We have quite the line of local talent,” said Mento.

Notable musicians in attendance will include Peter Anders (Andreoli) and Vini Poncia of the Videls/Tradewinds, Gerry Granahan of Dickey Doo and the Don’ts/ Fireflies and the Calamari Brothers.

Tickets are $20 per person and are available at Elks Lodge, 326 Farnum Pike (Routes 5 and 104), Smithfield, or through Jack Mento via email oldysinger@verizon.net or by phone, 508-359-7410. Guests will receive a hamburger or hot dog with the purchase of a ticket. Food donations are greatly appreciated.
