Moretti nets 1,000th point

Jordan Moretti became just the ninth Johnston girls’ basketball player to reach 1,000 career points when she sank a free throw during the first half of the Panthers’ 49-24 victory over Central on Friday night.

It took the junior guard less than three seasons to achieve the feat, logging major minutes in her freshman season, before leading the Panthers in scoring last season and this season.

“It was a big milestone,” Moretti said following Johnston’s victory over Pilgrim on Tuesday. “I had a lot of pressure and I was nervous, but once I got the point, it was just a relief. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. They helped me get there.”

It should come as no surprise that Moretti was able to reach 1,000 points so quickly, after she was third in Division II and sixth in the state with 17.6 points per game last winter as a sophomore.

This season, she’s upped her all-around game while still seeing an uptick in points, averaging 19.9 points per game – good for fourth in the state.

“It’s really impressive because I think we’ve needed every point that she’s gotten,” Johnston head coach Chris Corsinetti said with a laugh. “It’s not like she’s scored in garbage time because we haven’t had many garbage games. We’ve had all quality games this year, and last year we were an 8-10 team, so we were struggling to get where we were. Every basket, every point that she’s scored, we’ve needed every one of them.”

Moretti’s small in stature, but she’s been able to score in a plethora of ways during her career thanks in large part to her heart.

“It’s impressive, especially for a girl her size,” Corsinetti said. “But her heart tells the story. Her heart makes her 6-foot-3, not 5-foot-3, and that stretches it at 5-foot-3 to be honest with you.”
