Motorcyclist dies in U-turn accident in apparent pursuit of minivan

Arthur Pelliccia, 57, of North Providence, died May 6 at 7:18 p.m. from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on May 4 in which he apparently spun his motorcycle around on Greenwich Avenue, according to police.

The police investigation showed Pelliccia initially traveling south on Greenwich Avenue in the area of Vancouver Avenue before making a U-turn and then accelerating northbound. The accident occurred at 3:24 p.m. The operator lost control of the motorcycle just north of the Church of Christ at 934 Greenwich and the motorcycle appears to have flipped over before coming to rest. Pelliccia was thrown from the motorcycle and did not appear to be wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Witnesses describe a green, older model minivan exiting Vancouver Avenue turning left as the motorcyclist approached, causing him to slow down. Witnesses told investigators it appeared that Pelliccia exchanged words with the minivan operator just prior to the crash, but there did not appear to be any contact or collision with the two vehicles. The minivan continued northbound towards Route 113. At this point, it is not known if the operator was aware of the crash.

Lt. Michael Gilbert said yesterday investigators would like to speak to the operator of the minivan. He asked that anyone with information on the owner or operator of this vehicle to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division. Speed of the motorcycle appears to have been a factor in the crash, and there are no indications of alcohol.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at 468-4343.
