Popular movie themes, the debut of a new piece for wind bands about the famous Skyline Drive, and an evening of classical guitar are all on tap in three concerts at the University of Rhode Island the weekend of October 26-27. The concerts will take place in the URI Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, 105 Upper College Road, Kingston. Admission is $12 general public, $7 students, with tickets available in advance via credit card through the URI Music website, or by cash or check at the box office on a first-come basis starting 45 minutes before the concert.

The URI Symphony Orchestra starts off with a themed concert, “Great Film Scores of Our Time”, on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. The program will include music from “My Fair Lady,” “West Side Story,” “Robin Hood Prince of Thieves,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” a James Bond medley and a tribute to famed movie composer John Williams. Ann Danis conducts.

On Sunday, Oct. 27 at 3 p.m., the URI Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the premiere wind group in the Department of Music, will offer their fall concert. The group members are the finest wind and percussion instrumentalists in the university, directed by Gene J. Pollart. Their program will include the premiere of Frank Gulino’s new work, Skyline Drive, a descriptive piece about the spectacular mountain drive in Shenandoah National Park. They will also perform Percy Grainger’s Spoon River, Eric Whitacre’s October, Shadow Rituals by Michael Markowsky, and Bert Appermont’s four-part work, Noah’s Ark.

Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m., members of the URI Guitar Studio, coached by John Dennewitz, will present an evening of classical guitar solo and ensemble performances, joined by guest performer Raffi Donoian, a URI alumnus. The program will include works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Luigi Boccherini, John Duarte, Mauro Giuliani, Heitor Villa Lobos, Andrew York and more.
