Murray Scholarships to help those with disabilities

The Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) recently presented Catherine T. Murray Memorial $1,000 Scholarship Awards to three young people with disabilities.

Applicants were asked to talk about their disabilities while sharing their aspirations. A committee then scoured the more than 20 applications to arrive at their selections.

Samantha Collins is a graduate of Toll Gate High School and is currently enrolled in the University of Rhode Island’s nursing program. Her goal is to receive her Bachelor of Science degree and continue working toward a Master’s degree. Samantha, who has been making the Dean’s List, is involved with the URI student nursing association and participates in various volunteer activities. She is hard of hearing and plans to use a special amplifying stethoscope.

Steven Rego Jr., from Tiverton, is enrolled at Johnson & Wales University, majoring in the culinary arts. He has acquired his Associate’s degree and is working toward his BA degree. Rego works at an area restaurant gaining valuable experience in his field. His dream is to open his own restaurant where he can showcase his culinary skills to others.

Sara Iacono is a graduate of Veterans Memorial High School who plans to attend CCRI to earn an Associate’s degree in Fine Art and Theatre and then pursue a BA degree in make-up, costume and set design in theater and film. She has a passion for theater arts and has served as a theater ambassador at Trinity Rep. She hopes to become a set designer.
