To the Editor:
My best teacher, Miss Mary Tracey, was a dignified lady in her 70s. She told us about how she rode the stagecoaches when she was a kid in the 1880s. She had a big black cane that she banged on the floor when she wanted the students' attention. Miss Tracey did not seem to have any desire to retire, and got to school every day in her 1938 Buick. We all loved her!
I don't know why the teachers' union leadership sees hardships in encouraging teachers to continue to teach into their late 60s and even 70s.
