NEIT to offer Health Information Management Technology program

In response to the needs of the healthcare industry, New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) will now offer an Associate in Science degree program in Health Information Management Technology (HIMT) known generally within the industry as Electronic Health Records (EHR). Classes will begin on January 3, 2012.

By 2014, all physician offices, hospitals, long term care facilities, community-based health centers, outpatient care centers, home healthcare services, managed care organizations, and behavioral health facilities must be proficient in EHR standards as mandated by the Federal Government. New England Tech’s new HIMT degree program will prepare students for careers as certified health information management professionals.

This new curriculum combines elements of healthcare, business, and information technology. Coursework involves medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health data requirements and standards, healthcare reimbursement methods including clinical classification, billing and coding systems, data analysis, database security and management, confidentiality of personal health information, and quality improvement methods. Students will be trained on electronic health records software applications to maintain data on patient safety, patterns of disease, treatment and biomedical statistics as well as learn to facilitate data collection, analysis, storage, reporting, and retrieval of health information. Students will be exposed to the legal, ethical, and professional guidelines to manage health information within diverse healthcare delivery systems and promote privacy, confidentiality, and safety of patient data.

The Health Information Management Technology program is a full-time, 6-quarter program that may be completed in as little as 18 months. Upon successful completion of the entire course of study, graduates may sit for the Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS) and the Certified Professional in Electronic Health Records (CPEHR) national examinations. Eligible students may qualify for a Federal grant awarded to New England Tech.
