NEIT to offer RI's first online RN-BSN program

@T_Basic:New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) will offer Rhode Island’s first online Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) program. This new online program will prepare Registered Nurses to meet the demands of the health care field by expanding and enhancing their nursing education. Scheduled to begin spring 2012, this program will prepare students for leadership roles and graduate studies in nursing.

The RN-BSN program is designed for Registered Nurses with an associate degree or diploma in nursing. A candidate for admission to the RN-BSN program must have a valid United States unencumbered Registered Nurse license. Courses are focused around the National League for Nursing Core Competencies.

The online format is tailored to meet the needs of the working adult learner and may be completed in as little as 15 months. Some of the coursework includes: Concepts of Professional Nursing, Regulatory Environment, Ethical and Legal Issues, Informatics and Healthcare Technology, Quality and Safety, and Application of Research to Clinical Practice. A final Capstone Practicum takes place in a selected clinical practice setting where the RN-BSN student can reinforce and apply the learning from all courses in the program. Students have the opportunity to build professional nursing leadership through clinical reasoning, management skills and competencies, and evaluation skills. Graduates of this program will be well prepared for positions in community health clinics, private practice, hospitals and patient care facilities.

Nursing is the largest health care occupation. U.S. statistics show that in 2007, Registered Nurses held about 2.8 million jobs, with hospitals employing the majority of RNs at 59 percent. About 8 percent of RN positions were in physicians’ offices, 5 percent in home health care services, 5 percent in nursing care facilities, 4 percent in employment services and 3 percent in outpatient care centers. The remainder of Registered Nurses worked mostly in government agencies, social assistance agencies and educational services.
