NEMA grant will be used to advance Fire Dept. life support systems

Mayor Scott Avedisian and Fire Chief Edmund Armstrong have announced that the department has been awarded a grant of $3,645 from the National Emergency Medicine Association (NEMA). The grant was made possible in part through a grant from the National Heart Council, a special program of NEMA.

NEMA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1982, committed to trauma prevention and the delivery of quality medical services at each stage of trauma with an emphasis on first response at the time of the emergency.

NEMA awards grants nationally to direct service providers that are working to prevent trauma and reverse damage due to trauma.

“The Warwick Fire Department is grateful to be one of the few agencies selected to receive grant funding from NEMA,” Armstrong said.

The funds will be used toward the purchase of nine EZ/IO drills and needles. The I/O drills will augment the advanced life support capabilities of the department’s nine engine companies. EZ-IO provides personnel immediate vascular access to the central circulation within seconds, delivering medications and intravenous fluids to adult and pediatric patients alike. With a specially designed cutting IO needle and small power driver, EZ-IO provides rapid, smooth entry into the bone marrow cavity, creating an immediate conduit to the central circulation.

This is the third grant the department has received in recent weeks; it recently received a $683,451 grant from the federal 2001 Assistance to Firefighters grant program to help fund the purchase of a new aerial ladder truck and, prior to that, received nearly $194,000 toward upgrades to its radio system.

The department’s grant writing committee consists of Lt. Jason Erban and Pvts. Scott Jensen and Christopher Albro.

Now we get to hear from the gasoline dumper about how grants are bad for the city?
