Narcon saves life in Warwick

Officers from the Warwick Police Department responded to the intersection of Elmwood and Pawtuxet Avenues around 6:50 p.m. on Sunday for a reported motorist who had stopped in the roadway at the traffic signal and did not proceed after the light had cycled to green several times.

While en route to the scene officers were advised that the adult male motorist was “leaning to one side, then jumped up and is now laying down in the seat.” Upon arrival on scene Officer Christian Vargas observed the unresponsive male slumped over across the front seat in obvious physical distress. Based on his training, Vargas concluded the man’s condition was consistent with an overdose of a narcotic. Officer Vargas used his Naloxone (Narcan) kit and administered a dose of the medication, along with CPR, until Warwick Rescue arrived. They arrived on scene as the man began to respond to the Naloxone and he was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

An investigation revealed the male was under the influence of heroin, which he had purchased outside the City of Warwick. The male was not charged with any criminal offenses as a result of this incident and he was left in the care of Rhode Island Hospital.
