National Night Out celebration planned at Oakland Beach

The City’s annual National Night Out event, which was postponed due to the August 4 storm, will be held on Wednesday, August 26 beginning at 5 p.m. at the Oakland Beach seawall, Mayor Scott Avedisian said last week. There will be no fireworks display as initially planned.

The event, which brings law enforcement officials together with the community, is free. Parking may be restricted on some streets, but there is designated parking in the ball field, adjacent to the commons, as well as in the surrounding area.

Events include a demonstration of police and fire equipment, representation from neighborhood groups, an opening ceremony featuring the Warwick Police Honor Guard, and a variety of other family-friendly activities and events.

In its 32nd year, National Night Out is the creation of the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and is meant to bring attention to local anti-crime programs, strengthen the relationship among and between community groups and law enforcement; foster a sense of community; and bring attention to drug and crime prevention efforts. Neighbors celebrate in 16,124 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.
