Neighbors Helping Neighbors seeking donations to meet holiday food needs

Posted

The Neighbors Helping Neighbors food program is up and running for another holiday season.

The Department of Human Services is seeking the assistance of the Warwick community to help needy families this holiday season by making donations to “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.”

In announcing the program, Mayor Scott Avedisian said it provided more than 1,300 gift certificates for Thanksgiving and Christmas last year.

Again this year, due to the high number of requests, residents will be eligible to receive assistance for one holiday only.

Those who would like to make a donation to “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”: Monetary donations should be made payable to “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” and sent to Roberta Steinle, Warwick Human Services Department, 3027 West Shore Road, Warwick, RI 02886 or the Warwick Beacon, 1944 Warwick Ave., Warwick, RI 02889. As it has done for years, the Beacon will publish the names of all monetary donors. Non-perishable food items may be dropped off at: Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway or Buttonwoods Community Center, 3027 West Shore Road, both in Warwick.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors serves as a clearinghouse for donations, matching organizations such as St. Gregory the Great Church and the Warwick Rotary, which both donate food baskets, with needy families. The effort is designed to ensure needs are met and that some don’t end up receiving multiple baskets or gift certificates.

Residents who are in need of a basket are asked to apply in person at the City of Warwick Human Services Department, Buttonwoods Community Center, 3027 West Shore Road, Warwick. Applicants must show proof of residency and proof of income. The deadline to apply for either holiday is Thursday, Nov. 6.
