New website finds Warwick ‘happy’ place to live

By analyzing data from the 2010-2014 American Community survey, Zippia, a career information platform, found that Warwick is the 5th “happiest” city in Rhode Island.

Zippia, based out of San Francisco, was founded in May 2015 and digitally offers tools and information on not only finding a career but also how to make the most out of that career. A data-driven company, Zippia, offers information and advice on how best to get promoted in a field, necessary training and education, the best cities or states for an industry as well as the areas that pay the most.

The website ventured into rating the “happiness” of different municipalities in any one state in an effort to help career seekers find the communities they may want to live in as they look for an occupation.

“As we all know, where we live and the job we have can all play a big part in our overall sense of contentment and happiness,” the report said. “For that reason, we took a dive into the most recent census data to help you identify which places in Rhode Island have the biggest smile of them all.”

Zippia analyzed and released Rhode Island’s ranking on Monday.

The company uses seven criteria to determine the happiest cities and towns: the percentage of population with at least a bachelor’s degree, the unemployment rate, length of work commute, cost of living, marital status, homeownership and the poverty rate. The seven rankings were averaged into a “happiness index” to finally create the ratings.

The top 10 municipalities, in order are Cumberland, Valley (Central) Falls, Tiverton, Greenville, Warwick, Westerly, Wakefield-Peacedale, Newport East, East Providence and Cranston.

Warwick had the greatest population of any listed city, at more than 82,000, with Cranston as a close second with just over 80,000. Cumberland in first place only had 8,194. Cumberland also has the highest percentage of homeownership with 81.1 percent of residents owning their own homes. In comparison, 67 percent of Warwick residents own their home.

Although the Beacon had reached out to Zippia representatives, contact had not been reciprocated before deadline.
