The Newport Yachting Center is getting its long-anticipated 2014 Newport Concert Series jamming starting on Saturday, May 31 with reggae and roots masters The Wailers & Rusted Root. The Wailers will be performing Bob Marley’s 1984 album Legend in its entirety in commemoration of it being 30 years since its release. Tickets are still available for purchase for $39.50, $49.50 and $59.50 by visiting www.newportwaterfrontevents.com or calling Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000.

The gates will open at 4 p.m. with The Ravers kicking the music off at 4:30 p.m. on the Point Stage followed by Adam Ezra on the Main Stage at 6 p.m., Rusted Root at 6:50 p.m. and then The Wailers at 8:40 p.m. The Newport Concert Series has announced 14 concerts to date through October at its unique setting in the heart of historic downtown Newport.

“We have traditionally had success with reggae at our waterfront venue as it always creates a nice island vibe,” said Michele Maker Palmieri, General Manager of the Newport Yachting Center. “So we’re anticipating a great kick-off to this year’s Newport Concert Series with The Wailers and Rusted Root at the end of this month, followed by Ziggy Marley in June and the Newport Waterfront Reggae Festival featuring reggae icon Freddie McGregor in August.”

Starting with its long musical partnership with reggae legend Bob Marley, which included backing Marley on his international breakthrough album Natty Dread, The Wailers and its leader-bassist Aston “Family Man” Barrett have sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide and are now considered by many to be the greatest living exponents of Jamaica’s reggae tradition. Outside of the band’s groundbreaking work with Marley, The Wailers have cut numerous albums and toured around the globe with international acts, including Sting, Stevie Wonder and Carlos Santana, as well as reggae legends Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and Burning Spear.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s own Rusted Root is known for their unique fusion of acoustic, rock, world and other styles of music with a strong percussion section that draws from African, Latin American and Native American influences. Formed in 1990, the band’s eight album releases have sold more than 3 million copies worldwide and its music has been featured in films like Ice Age, Twister and Matilda. Rusted Root’s most recent album is entitled “The Movement.”

Also performing along Newport Harbor on Friday, June 20 is popular reggae artist, Ziggy Marley – The Fly Rasta Tour. Tickets are still available for purchase for $36.50, $46.50 and $61.50. Son of reggae legend Bob Marley, he is a six-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner and award-winning producer. As front man for Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers, the group released eight best-selling albums that garnered three Grammys, with such chart-topping hits as “Look Who’s Dancing,” “Tomorrow People” and “Tumbling Down.” His latest release is entitled “Fly Rasta.”

In addition to The Wailers & Rusted Root and Ziggy Marley – The Fly Rasta Tour, the Newport Concert Series at the Newport Yachting Center has a lineup of 12 other concerts to-date: Dierks Bentley - Riser 2014 Tour on Thursday, June 19; KC and the Sunshine Band on Wednesday, July 9th; John Hiatt & The Combo and The Robert Cray Band on Saturday, July 12; An Evening with YES on Sunday, July 13; Barenaked Ladies on Friday, July 18; The Machine performs Pink Floyd with the Interstellar Laser Show on Friday, July 25; 3 Doors Down Acoustic – Songs From The Basement on Friday, August 1; Boz Scaggs – The Memphis Tour on Wednesday, August 6; Gregg Allman with Special Guest Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band on Sunday, August 10; Josh Turner’s Roughstock and Rambler Tour (presented by Ariat) on Thursday, August 14; The Beach Boys on Saturday, August 16; and Chris Young With Special Guest Courtney Cole on Saturday, September 20.
