Night in a box

Friday’s rain didn’t deter some youthful members of St. Gregory the Great parish from spending the night in cardboard boxes as part of an effort to understand the plight of the homeless and raise funds for Emmanuel House. They raised $2,700 with the “homeless encampment.” Eileen Kelly, director of religious foundation for the church, said this is the first encampment the church has run in several years. The evening started at about 8 with youths decorating their boxes – wrapping them in waterproof tarps, a feature used by Brooke Casacalenda, proved popular. This was followed by the showing of the movie “The Human Experience,” pizza and a prayer before “box time” at midnight. Following breakfast Saturday, the “box people” attended mass at 8:30. Seen getting acclimated to his box while others prepare theirs for the night is Nick Costa. Kelly reported that about half of the 40 kids came into the church at 4 a.m. soaked. “They really learned what it’s like to be homeless – never want to be in that position and are willing to help out folks who are,” she said.
