Not quite as forecast

Posted

Lynch Mayer, a native of Hawaii now living in Attleboro, says some of the best kite-surfing in the Northeast is right here at Conimicut Point. “The wind is always blowing,” he said Sunday. But then with Hermine, a post tropical cyclone off shore, winds were in the forecast. Rain was also in the forecast, but fortunately the sun prevailed for the Labor Day Sunday. Lynch said few things can compare to the exhilaration of speed that comes with kite-surfing other than snowboarding. But, he adds, snowboarding is limited and can be expensive…and the wind is just about always blowing at Conimicut and it’s free. (Warwick Beacon photos)

Warwick needs more of this! We need to promote our water activities. Visitors/tourists become new homeowners, new business owners and especially, new taxpayers, which reduces the taxes on the rest of us. We need to promote Warwick to the rest of Rhode Island and as activities like these increase the interest in Warwick, our total number of taxpayers will increase, schools will receive new students, our taxes-per-taxpayer will decrease, our property values will increase, and our quality-of-life will improve. Warwick needs "Welcome to Warwick" signs and magazines, flowers in the wrought iron planters at City Hall (and Christmas decorations as well), and an all-out program to get people to move "into" Warwick, not "out of". I suggest tax rebate checks to attract new home buyers and businesses and a 2 year moratorium on building permit fees to stimulate construction which increases tax revenue forever. Warwick has lost 5,800 taxpayers and 4,666 businesses in the last ten years alone. That is disgraceful and as Mayor I plan on reversing that trend. I can see concerts in Rocky Point, parades such as St. Patrick's Day, and a campaign to promote our beaches. Please join me with your vote, your suggestions and your time.

    Thank you. Welcome "Autumn".

    Endorsed Democrat for Mayor

The prior comment is by a political candidate who has repeatedly claimed a loss of more than 4,600 businesses from Warwick based on a fraudulent comparison between US Census numbers and data from the RI Secretary of State, which use different methods of counting businesses in Warwick.

According to the US Census, Warwick had 8,410 firms listed in 2007. A more accurate comparison of data from the same source, the US Census for 2012, showed 8,299 firms, or 111 fewer. Scroll down to Businesses at the following link and view the "all firms" statistic.

This candidate clearly assumes that voters in Warwick will not look into the facts for themselves. Please join the thousands of voters in Warwick who know the truth and will reject this candidate.

    Dear CrickeeRaven,

    You are wrong again.

I tried to get the accurate figures from the Warwick Tax Assessors office. They wouldn't release them to me. I then petitioned the R.I. Attorney Generals Office under the Freedom of Information Act. The Warwick Tax Assessors Office still stonewalled me stating to me and the Beacon that the information was not in "document" form. Finally, I went to the R.I. Secretary of States office and got the accurate information e-mailed to me, and upon showing the written conformation to the Beacon they allowed me to print it in their newspaper. Please note that if they could not independently verify the information, they never would have printed it. In that case it would be considered rumor or gossip. You know, like the lies and "junk" that you print in the comment section, knowing that you can hide in the anonymity of a phony (and rather bizarre) name.

Hope to see everyone at the Food Truck event at City Hall Thursday night from 4:30 on.

    Happy Autumn

In the same Beacon article quoted by a candidate for mayor above, the writer of the article states: "Corrente didn’t have more current census or more historic secretary of state figures that would have given comparisons."

This shows that the article writer sought additional information from this candidate, but did not receive it.

    http://warwickonline.com/stories/corrente-gop-chair-differ-over-meaning-of-the-numbers,113096?

This candidate's failure to produce additional data from each source, and/or the writer's decision to publish an article lacking this information, does not lend support to his incorrect comparison between two sets of data.

His claimed difficulty in getting public documents aside, the fact is that comparing information from the US Census and that from the Rhode Island Secretary of State, which each employ a different method of counting businesses, results in an erroneous conclusion that he refuses to acknowledge or correct.

Please join me and the thousands of Warwick voters who will reject this candidate on Nov. 8.

    Mr. Corrente,

We frequently disagree on issues, bit I certainly admire your passion for the city. Whether or not your mayoral run is successful, I urge you to re-evaluate your endorsement of antiquated entities such as public sector unions and public sector defined benefit plans, which are bankrupting municipalities like Warwick. In any case, retain that passion!

    Dear John Stark,

In the last 2 years I have learned a college tuition amount of facts and figures about those "antiquated entities" as you call them and I agree with you wholeheartedly. They are antiquated! They are costing the taxpayers a fortune and they don't benefit the recipients nearly as much as they should. In fact, you could pay less as an individual than as an employee, and that doesn't consider what the "employer-paid" portion is. I will take a long hard look at them and I will find a solution that benefits us all. I promise. When I had Blue Cross for the 51 employees of my mortgage company, Bankers Mortgage Corporation, we did an honest cost comparison and learned that the employee portion of the bill was higher than if the employee walked into Blue Cross as an individual. Add the "employer-paid" amount to the total premium to it and it was easy to understand why Blue Cross makes over a billion dollars a year. John, I intend on making that same honest comparison in 2017. Want to help? Call me at 401-338-9900. Better yet, I will be at the Food Truck event Thursday 9/8/2016 from 4:30 on. Stop by and the coffee is on me.

Thanks for your kind words John.

    Rick
