‘Not the prettiest thing’

The Warwick Beacon wasn’t alone in getting calls as crews erected Friday a “blast deflector” at the end of Runway 16-34. The Rhode Island Airport Corporation also got the calls and President and CEO Kelly Fredericks had to agree that the structure is “not the prettiest thing.” He plans to do something about it, although as of Friday a plan hasn’t been finalized. He said there is no room for landscaping and RIAC is looking into panels. The fiberglass deflector is part of the safety area improvements being made to the runway. Concrete deflectors had previously been further away from Airport Road and not as high. This one meets FAA specifications. Is this an indication that the runway has been lengthened? “We’re not lengthening it,” Fredericks said. The Runway threshold points remain the same, as does the Runway length at 6,081 feet.
