To the Editor:
On a typical Saturday in January, kids usually hang out with their friends, sit at home and watch TV or possibly spend the day playing video games, but on Saturday, Jan. 21, a large group of kids were doing a whole lot more. On that day over 1,000 Boy Scouts were spending their day at Rhode Island College participating in Merit Badge College.
Merit Badge College is an event where Boy Scouts get to choose up to two Merit Badges to work on for the day. Some Merit Badges have prerequisites that have to be completed before the event. There were two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Some of the Merit Badges the scouts could choose were Robotics, Personal Management, Communications, Fly Fishing and Computers, just to name a few.
This event can help the Scout advance and choose Merit Badges that they might have not been able to do. It was a fun event and one to look forward to each year. This year, 17 out of 18 Scouts from my Troop – Troop 7 Buttonwoods – attended. Boy Scouts is open to all boys 11 to 18 years old, and a boy can join at anytime. So come and join so you, too, can attend an event like this one.
