OSTC summer camp in full swing, second session starts July 25

The first session of the Ocean State Theatre Camp is in full swing. Although this session, which ends July 25, is full, there are still openings for the second session starting July 28 and running to Aug. 15.

Imagination, singing, dancing and acting are just a few things that happen at the Ocean State Theatre Company Camp. Campers have the opportunity to work with theatre professionals while learning performance techniques, including acting, voice and dance. Campers also learn technical skills, including the design and creation of costumes, sets and props, which will be used for a full-scale musical production, to be performed.

Thus far, the campers in the first session have had the opportunity to see how a tech rehearsal works, they have met with a local playwright and they have taken part in a hip hop master class taught by a local choreographer.

“We have really exceeded our expectations,” said Karen Kessler, director of marketing and publications relations at Ocean State Theatre. “We have more than doubled.”

Ocean State Theatre Company welcomes back Dr. Frederic Scheff, who returns as the camp director for both sessions of this year’s camp. Dr. Scheff received rave reviews for his performance as Valjean in Ocean State Theatre Company’s critically acclaimed production of “Les Misérables,” which kicked off the company’s 2013-14 season. In addition to touring the country in “Phantom of the Opera,” he has appeared locally with the South County Chamber Singers, Opera Providence, Operatunity, Operartisti, University of Rhode Island, Ocean State Light and Lyric Opera Companies, Ocean State Chamber Orchestra, Theatre-by-the-Sea, Beavertail Productions, and Trinity Repertory Company.

The total cost for the camp is $725 per 3-week session. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Ocean State Theatre on Jefferson Boulevard.

Applications are available online by visiting www.OceanStateTheatre.org. For registration information, call 921-6800, stop by the box office Monday through Friday from 12 to 6 p.m. or Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m., or visit www.OceanStateTheatre.org.
