Jeff Stetson’s two-man, one-act play about a fictional meeting between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X is given a tight, taut, tense interpretation by three fine actors under the direction of Amiee Turner at Warwick’s Ocean State Theatre Company.

OSTC’s contribution to Black History Month is being offered to local school systems and should be seen by all students who will gain a greater understanding of these two men who both want the same thing but approach their responses to racism from completely opposite positions.

They meet in Malcolm X’s Harlem hotel in February of 1965, at first very suspicious of each other, almost to the point of hostility, and leave after 80 minutes with an understanding and respect for each other.

Damon Russel Armstrong exudes the frustration, anger and hostility of the militant Malcolm X, whose answer to racism is to fight back. While Marcus Denard Johnson bears little resemblance to King, he does convince you that he is the troubled man who preaches non-violence.

The third character is Rashad, Malcolm X’s bodyguard, an opinionated man whose goal is to protect his boss, to the point of frisking King. Tony Mitchell has a minor role, but his presence and large stature are felt whenever he is on stage.

There is some humor in the play, as the two men toy with each other to the point of somewhat contrived arm wrestling moments.

The play opens with news footage of King’s “I have a dream…” speech, closing with footage linking the ’60s to current events, including Ferguson.

There are a number of quotes from King and Malcolm X weaved into the conversation, including the ominous cloud of assassination that looms over them.

Ocean State Theatre runs the risk of including a serious play that is in sharp contrast with their spectacular Broadway musicals. It needs our support and attention, especially from school groups who should jump at the chance of exposing their students to an important part of American history.

“The Meeting” is at Ocean State Theatre, 1245 Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick, through February 15. For reservations call 921-6800. For student matinees call 921-1777 x112 for dates and availability.
