(Sci-fi apocalyptic adventure)

If you like your science fiction filled with exciting adventures and a bit of romance, you’ll like “Oblivion.”

While it does go on a bit too long, has some familiar themes and gets a bit convoluted at times, it still has enough of a story plus some great special effects to hold your interest.

Tom Cruise stars as Jack Harper, a drone maintenance pilot whose job is to protect the drones from the evil Scavengers. The year is 2077, and the Scavengers have destroyed the moon and devastated Earth.

Jack has the perfect partner in Victoria (Andrea Riseborough), who serves as his communications officer on their elaborate space station, guiding him as he flies around in his spaceship fixing any mechanical problems to ocean reactors that provide sea water to the remaining population living on another moon.

Jack’s big problem is that he has no memory of his past. There’s this woman (Olga Kurylenko) who keeps showing up in his dreams and eventually shows up in a crashed spaceship. Jack rescues her, brings her back to the space station, and causes a bit of a love triangle with Victoria. There are some eerie scenes as Jack lands near the site of the last Super Bowl and the Empire State Building, or what is left of it.

The first hour of the two-hour movie is basically centered around the three characters and the TV screen image of their supervisor (Melisa Leo), until Jack runs into a rebel group living in a gigantic cave, led by Morgan Freeman. The movie gets a bit discombobulated as Jack (and the audience) try to figure out what is real, what is a dream, and where the heck this movie is going. It goes off in many directions, and just when you think it is about to wrap up, something else happens.

Can Jack sort everything out and figure out what is real? And can he save what is left of humanity?

You’ll have to sit through some amazing special effects and some confusing moments before the final battle.

Rated PG-13, with sci-fi violence, profanity, nudity and a bit of space sex.
