It was a wet observance of the Laotian New Year Saturday, but that didn’t stop the Rhode Island Hmong community from holding their celebration at the Mickey Stevens Sports Complex.
Mayor Scott Avedisian welcomed the Hmong for the 12th annual celebration held in Warwick – it was previously held in Providence – and the first one where it rained. But contrary to what Avedisian would have thought, he said he was told that rain on the new year is considered good luck as it washes away the ills of the old year.
While many of the attendees clustered in tents to watch performances, enjoy native dishes, buy native crafts and watch videos, other didn’t let the conditions stop them from playing volleyball. By afternoon the rain ceased and the sun even made an appearance – a good way to start a new year.
