Mayor Scott Avedisian with a line-up of West Marine employees dressed in blues snipped the ribbon last weekend to officially open the 13,000-square-foot store at Warwick Commons at 399 Bald Hill Road (across from the Warwick Mall). This new West Marine store is twice the size of the previous East Greenwich location, with expanded assortments in every category throughout the store. There’s an enhanced electronics department with multiple units to touch and test, an expanded engine systems department (including a parts counter) as well as more options for paddlesports, boats, motors, fishing equipment, trailers and safety. There is also a wide assortment of casual and technical apparel, foul-weather gear, footwear and accessories, with some of the top brands including Pelagic and Sperry Top-Sider. Carl Hjerpe, a Rhode Island native who is a lifelong sailor and power boater, is general manager of the store. Hjerpe joined West Marine over 15 years ago and enjoys the Narragansett Bay with his family’s 42-inch power boat and his own 13-inch Boston Whaler. The 18-person West Marine crew at the new Warwick store has a combined 150 years of boating, fishing and sailing experience, including 100 Ton Masters.
