Mayor Scott Avedisian will join Fire Chief Edmund Armstrong, the Board of Public Safety and other department officials at a ceremony tonight to celebrate the graduation of Recruit Class 2012-2. The event begins at 6 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers, 3275 Post Road.
“Chief Armstrong and his instructors have done a tremendous job with this, both this recruit class and the one that graduated last fall,” Avedisian said in a statement. “I know our newest firefighters are ready to take on the challenges and responsibilities that come with a job in public safety and emergency preparedness. I thank Chief Armstrong for his leadership and for ensuring that our department is well prepared and highly trained.”
The following will take the oath of office as firefighters: Timothy J. Baribault, Timothy Bedard, Cody Bellavance, Adam Brulé, Christopher Charpentier, Stephen Ciambrone, Michael Cookson, Joseph D’Antonio, Keith Fontenault, Joseph G. Levesque, Colby Lucier, Justin Miller, Nicholas M. Myrtle, Nathan Pacheco, Brian Pettigrew, Zachary Rice, Aaron Rousseau, Alex Torres, Nicholas Ullrigh and Christopher Zaino.
The program includes an honor guard processional, greetings from Deputy Chief Francis Colantonio, an invocation from Father Robert Marciano, a department chaplain, the singing of the national anthem by Lt. John W. Halloran, greetings from Avedisian, an address from Armstrong and a benediction by Father Peter Mongeon, a department chaplain.
Avedisian and Armstrong will preside over the promotions. The Board of Public Safety includes Chairwoman Leslie Baxter, Dr. Joseph Spinale and Thomas McGovern.

20 more added to the existing 209. I wonder if the mayor will explain to them that the city is broke. It should be interesting to see if the 3.4 million overtime drops this year as the chief said it would. I hope the mayor explains to everyone that the 3 million dollar grant that we got for these recruits will be gone in 2 years, then the taxpayer will be responsible for the wages, healthcare and pension and post employment benefits on an already devastated budget.

I do believe its a 3 year grant that covers absolutely everything. That means salary, benefits, training, uniforms etc. Each platoon is going to be loaded with fed govt paid for floaters (who work for sick or vacationing guys at straight wages, again, paid for by the fed govt) so there really is no way that OT can't go down. Also, in three years the dept will see a good many retirements meaning that at the expiration of this grant you will not now be on the hook for 20 additional employees. There really is no serious way to look at this grant as anything but a huge windfall for local taxpayers. A windfall mind you that would not have befallen the taxpayers of this city if it were not for Unionized rank and file firefighters who took it upon themselves to embark upon the labor intensive application process on their own time and for no additional compensation from the city.
