Officials provide update on Westgate blaze; meeting for those affected scheduled for Sunday

City officials on Friday provided an update on details surrounding the Wednesday fire that destroyed one of the Westgate Condominium buildings, and announced that an informational meeting for those affected by the blaze has been scheduled for Sunday.

The meeting is set for 11 a.m. on March 15 at the Buttonwoods Community Center, located at 3027 West Shore Road. Mayor Scott Avedisian, Fire Chief Edmund Armstrong, Director of Family Support Services Patti St. Amant and representatives of the American Red Cross will be on hand.

According to the announcement from the mayor’s office, the city’s Fire Department has found that “as of March 11, 2015 there were no outstanding deficiencies or violations regarding the … Rhode Island Life Safety Code (RILSC) and Fire Alarm Codes (NFPA 72) for Westgate Condominiums.”

Additionally, the fire department through the announcement states that the “Fire Alarm System 552 was installed in building C at Westgate Condominiums in October 2007 and was last tested in December of 2014. It meets current Rhode Island Life Safety Code and is tested regularly The Automatic Sprinkler System is not required as outlined by RILSC.”

The announcement also states that the “Building Department has no record of outstanding deficiencies or violations.”

“At this time, we are still working alongside the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Investigation Team for the Property Management Company to determine the cause and origin of the fire,” Armstrong said through the statement.

“Our top priority continues to be ensuring the well-being of those residents affected by this tragedy. My administration has been working with the American Red Cross to ensure that those who have been displaced have food, lodging and prescription drugs. Additionally, we will be holding an informational meeting to connect residents with additional services,” Avedisian said.
