Oh what a night with 'Jersey Boys'

Jersey Boys Forrest Theatre

They’re back!

“Jersey Boys” is back at the Providence Performing Arts Center after a sold out run two years ago, and they’re better than ever.

Brad Weinstock comes directly from the Las Vegas production, playing Frankie Valli with gusto. His fabulous falsetto voice and good stage presence makes you believe he is that kid from Jersey who rose to fame and fortune.

Following him from Vegas is Colby Foytik as Tommy DeVito, the troubled organizer and self-appointed leader of the Four Seasons. Rounding out the original group are Brandon Andrus as Nick Massi and Jason Kappus as Bob Gaudio, who wrote their hit songs.

The musical starts slowly with each member of the group telling his version of how the group started, picking up steam when the group sings their first number one hit, “Sherry.”

From there it is nonstop hits, recognized and appreciated by the audience and remembered fondly by those of us who grew up in the ’60s.

At the end, the guys come out individually to tell “where they are now.” The audience reacted like they were saying “goodbye” to the actual Seasons, with wild, deserved applause.

“Jersey Boys” is one of those rare musicals that I could see over and over again. It requires singers/actors who can join together to perfectly create the Four Seasons sound and a “short Italian who can age nicely.” This show has it down perfectly, aided by a great backup band that moves smoothly off and on stage.

Weinstock brings down the house when he comes on stage to sing Valli’s comeback song, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” leaving me wanting to sign up as an usher so I could see the show a couple more times. You can catch it through Sept. 2 at PPAC. Good tickets are still available. Call 421-ARTS. Tickets begin at $28 and good up from there. You can see and hear the show from the second balcony without paying premium prices, but if you can afford it the show is worth its weight in gold.
