Our ‘failing’ I.R.S.

To the Editor:

My dad had a wonderful 30-year career with the Internal Revenue Service from 1950 to 1980. During that period the I.R.S. was a well run, respected and very powerful agency in all of the federal government. Today it’s being “racked” with one scandal, lie and cover-up after another. How can this happen in this era of technology and “checks and balances?”

The statistics tell the story! Three hundred eighteen thousand federal employees owe $3.3 billion in unpaid taxes. Only 21 percent of “We the People” pay their federal taxes yearly. The I.R.S. pays out $49 million in conference fees per calendar year.

The I.R.S. asks each paying citizen to hold onto their federal tax returns for seven years. Yet, the I.R.S., when investigated by the Senate during the Lois Lerner scandal, couldn’t produce documents needed during a two-year period. Al Sharpton, a frequent White House adviser, owes the I.R.S. over $5 million in unpaid taxes. Yet, “We the People” are a target if we pay our taxes “late.”

If this were the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, etc., Al Sharpton and others would be prosecuted and sent to federal prison for tax evasion!

Washington needs an overhaul and needs to be purged of corruption, lies, scandals and cover-ups before it collapses.
