After winning its first two games in the Babe Ruth state tournament, the Warwick 14-year-old all-star team ran into a tough Cranston team and suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses, ending its run.
On Thursday, in the winners’ bracket final, Warwick took Cranston to extra innings before struggling in the ninth and falling 7-1.
A day later, Warwick came back to beat Newport/Middletown 8-6 in the losers’ bracket finals to advance into the state finals, where Cranston was waiting.
Unfortunately for Warwick, a hard-fought game ended in a 5-4 loss, as Cranston captured the state title for the second consecutive year. The Cranston team won the title a season ago as 13-year-olds.
Warwick’s initial two wins in the tournament came against North Providence and Newport/Middletown.
