PAL 15s split first two games

The Warwick PAL 15-year-old all-star baseball team clinched a 1-0 victory over Aquidneck Island on Sunday to stay alive in the double-elimination state tournament.

Will Martino shut down Aquidneck over the first six innings of play before handing the ball over to Blake Roberge, who preserved the shutout.

Aquidneck put a runner on third with one out in the final inning. In an attempt to tie the game, a suicide squeeze attempt was called, but Warwick catcher Anthony Calise grabbed the ball and dove to tag the runner out at home.

Josiah Johnson stood out for Warwick at the plate in a game which featured little offense, notching two hits and scoring the game’s lone run.

The victory came after a tough loss on Friday night.

Tyler Noonan had a no-hitter through five innings for Warwick, as it led Coventry 3-0 going into the sixth.

However, Coventry rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the sixth to win by a final score of 5-3.

“We didn’t take advantage of our earlier scoring opportunities,” Warwick head coach Billy Piccirillo said. “Part of that was a result of a few mental running errors. We gave them a chance to get back in the game. We’re normally a good fundamental team, but we had a few lapses.”

Warwick was set to take on Coventry again, this time in an elimination game, on Monday night, but results were unavailable at press time.

If Warwick staved off elimination, it will play tonight at 7 p.m. at North Providence High School.
