Warwick PAL’s all-star squads will be looking to bring home more hardware when the Babe Ruth state tournaments begin this weekend.
Last year, Warwick’s 14-year-old team captured the championship and advanced to regionals. The players from that team will look for another championship in the 15-year-old division this year.
The 15-year-old tournament will be held at Slater Park in Pawtucket. Warwick will open the tourney on Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Cumberland. With a win, the team would play again on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The championship game is slated for Friday, July 22 at 5:30 p.m., with a second game right after, if needed.
The 15-year-olds are once again managed by Brian Hawkins, who led the team to the title last season. Hawkins also coached his regular-season team to the PAL junior division championship.
The 14-year-old state tournament will be played at Cranston Stadium. It also begins Friday, with Warwick taking on Cumberland at 8 p.m. A win would move Warwick into another 8 p.m. game on Saturday. The title would be up for grabs on Wednesday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m.
Kurt Rix is managing the team after coaching the all-stars to the championship game of the 13-year-old tournament last year.
The 13-year-olds begin their tournament on Saturday morning at North Providence High School. Warwick plays the first game of the tournament against Cranston at 10 a.m. The winner plays Sunday at 4 p.m. The championship is scheduled for Thursday, July 21 at 6:30 p.m.
Mike Giard, the owner of Diamond Baseball Academy and a former coach at Warwick Continental, will manage the 13-year-old squad.
As the state tournaments approach, PAL officials would like to thank the league’s sponsors: Brennan's Braces, F. O. P. #7, Coastway Community Bank, Greenwood Credit Union, Diamond Baseball Academy, Hurd Auto, Meadowbrook Lanes, Quinn Funeral Home, Titan's Sports, RIBCO and West Shore Collision.
The all-star teams are sponsored by Wave Credit Union, Casey Auto Sales and West Shore Collision.
