Palazzo’s Pizza has that special something

One thing is for certain: There are a lot of pizza places in Rhode Island. Another thing is for certain: Only a few of them have that special something that makes them stand out above the rest.

Jim Palazzo has found the secret ingredients that make his new establishment in the heart of Buttonwoods special. Jim comes to the area with years of experience in the food industry, dating back to Almacs, continuing at Dave’s Market, and then to running his own deli in Governor Francis.

When the former Lakis Pizza building at 3003 West Shore Road in Warwick became available, Jim quickly moved, taking to renovate the building and open for business in April.

“We had a soft opening, and still had over 1,000 customers the first week,” Jim said. “It’s a perfect location, with traffic coming from four directions, plenty of parking and stores and businesses all around.”

“We’re truly a family-owned small business,” Jim said. “My son, daughter, father-in-law and other relatives all help out. Our pizza is hand-tossed thin crust New York style, plus we have some very interesting gourmet pizzas.”

The something really special is Palazzo’s Mashed Potato Pizza, which daughter Nicole said is her favorite and convinced us to try.

The 16-inch pizza is made with homemade mashed potato, real bacon (Jim and I both detest bacon bits), cheese and scallions. Sour cream enhances the flavor and can be cooked on or served as a side. ($14.99). It is the most unusual, tastiest, original pizza I have ever had.

Other gourmet pizzas include the Breakfast Pizza (eggs, bacon and cheese) for $13.99; Eggplant Parmesan (eggplant, sauce, Romano cheese and a three-cheese blend for $13.99; and the ultimate Feast Pizza, with pepperoni, sausage, meatball, mushroom, onion, pepper and the three-cheese topping for $15.99.

Regular pizzas come 12-inch, 16-inch and 18-inch and range from $7.99 to $16.99, depending on size and number of toppings, with over 16 items to choose from.

You must try the Italian calzone, fresh dough that is hand-stretched and made fresh to order, with pepperoni, capocollo, salami and provolone cheese. At $4.99, it is a meal in itself. Palazzo’s also offers a variety of hot or cold 8-inch grinders for $5.99 and $6.99 and chicken tenders for the kids, who don’t seem to eat anything else these days.

There are 50 seats in the brightly lit restaurant, with TV screens and fascinating murals by local artist Rob Radigan. Check the mural that covers the outside wall and see if you can spot Jim’s dog. (“I told you the whole family was involved.”)

Palazzo’s also has a wine and beer license.

They are open daily, Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. (closed Monday).

Palazzo’s does a big take-out business, judging from the steady line of customers last Wednesday, where a Sunday and Wednesday pizza special of two large one-topping pizzas from $16.99 was selling like hot cakes (or hot pizzas).

Palazzo’s Pizza is located at 3003 West Shore Rd. in Warwick. Order ahead at 737-4445. Their e-mail is palazzospizza2014@gmail.com and web site is Palazzo’s Pizza.com. They also deliver.
