Palm Sunday concert brings together musicians from 8 churches

Lakewood Baptist Church will host its 13th annual Rhode Island Community Food Bank Benefit Concert this Sunday, which is Palm Sunday. The concert will host eight churches, including Lakewood, all of which have prepared a few songs with either a soloist, their choir or even a band.

Last year the event had almost 150 in attendance and raised nearly $2,500 said Lincoln Smith, coordinator for the concert. He is hopeful of raising even more this year.

Smith, who has been involved with the benefit concert since the beginning, said Lakewood is a “mission-minded church.” Every Sunday the church collects food for Westbay Community Action and holds other fundraisers throughout the year.

Smith said he can’t wait to plan the concert every year and, “Everyone gets pretty excited. We all look forward to it every year.”

Smith’s family was very charitable and had a “passion” for helping people, a passion that “rubbed off” on Smith.

He said, “I believe no one should be hungry.”

Concerning the concert, Smith said, “It’s a great way to start off holy week with good music and fellowship.”

The performing churches are, Lakewood Baptist Church, Norwood Baptist Church, Spring Green Memorial Church, Warwick Central Baptist Church, Pawtuxet Baptist Church with their band Basic Worship, Woodbury Union Church Presbyterian, First Baptist Church Wickford’s Kyrie Road band and Phenix Baptist Church.

The concert at Lakewood Baptist church on 255 Atlantic Ave., begins at 6:30 p.m. and should last between an hour and a half to two hours. Admission is at least one non-perishable food item and a free will offering made out to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank will also be collected.
