Palumbo excelling at RWU

Posted

As he enters the homestretch of his intercollegiate career, former Hendricken standout Ryan Palumbo has been thrust into the spotlight for the Roger Williams five this winter, leading the blue and gold-clad Hawks on the hardwood in more ways than one.

The 5-foot, 10-inch guard was selected as one of the three captains for RWU prior to the start of the season, and has mostly set the standard for his teammates to follow.

To date, Palumbo is the only Roger Williams player to have started every game, logging an average of 32 minutes and reaching double figures in all but one contest in the process.

Additionally, the senior playmaker is currently leading RWU in assists (43) and steals (27) while contributing a team-high 12.6 points per game.

When Palumbo and the Hawks return from the Christmas break, the objective is to continue the run of good results that has got Roger Williams on the brink of the .500 mark after recording four defeats in their first five games.

After the early-season fallow spell, RWU has since won three of its last four, with all three victories coming on the road against UMass-Dartmouth, Western New England and Salve Regina.

The 4-5 Hawks return to the court the day after New Year’s, hosting Brandeis in the team’s final non-conference tilt of the season.

Barrette wins

Springfield Invite

Pilgrim graduate Destinee Barrette got off to a sparking start to her sophomore year on December 6, by claiming first prize in the weight throw at the Springfield College Invitational in Springfield, Mass.

The ex-Patriot, now competing in the colors of Rhode Island College, finished on top with an effort that traveled 15.41 meters, helping the Anchorwomen to a third-place finish at the four-team meet.

Barrette also competed in the shot put at the meet – which opened the indoor season for RIC – coming home fifth with a 9.68-meter throw.

Additionally, Barrette was named the Little East Conference’s women’s field athlete of the week for the first time in her career, after having previously earned six women’s rookie field athlete of the week nods in her freshman campaign.
