Patriots, Hawks shine at divisions

Patriots, Hawks shine at divisions

Pilgrim took third in the girls’ outdoor track Central Division Championships on Monday at Cranston West and Bishop Hendricken won the boys’ event Tuesday at Conley Stadium.

The Patriots racked up 19 medals for 83 points. Only state title contenders La Salle and Classical ranked ahead of the Pats. The Rams won the meet with 198 and Classical was second with 140.

Melanie Brunelle had four top-six finishes to lead the charge for Pilgrim. She took second in the triple jump, third in the high jump, fourth in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the long jump.

Maddison Caron medalled in three throwing events, taking fifth in the shot put and sixth in both the discus and the hammer. Three other Patriots took home two medals: Rebecca O’Donnell finished second in the long jump and third in the triple jump; Danika Wayss finished third in the 800 and fourth in the 1,500; and Bryanna Mullin finished third in the 3,000 and sixth in the 1,500.

Also for the Pats, Emma Landroche took third in the 200, Claudia DeMelo finished third in the 300 hurdles, Madison Stanley took fourth in the triple jump along with an eighth in the 400 and Nicole Morales finished fifth in the 400. The 4x100 relay team of O’Donnell, Landroche, Morales and Molly Lynch took fourth, and the 4x800 team of Mary Kate Agnew, Emma Vincent, Hannah Ambrosia and Maranda Duffie took fourth.

Finishing just outside medal contention for Pilgrim were Ambrosia, Lynch, Emma Thibodeau, Alexa Annotti, Elicia Nemirow and Mackenzie Caron.

Toll Gate finished sixth in the girls’ meet with seven medals. Courtney Jacobsen had the top individual performance with a second-place finish in the hammer throw and she also took eighth in the discus. Haley Rouleau finished third in the pole vault, Ani Armenakyan took third in the shot put, Jess Cawley finished fourth in the 800, Arielle Frank took fifth in the javelin and Alyssa Mathews took sixth in the javelin. The 4x800 relay squad of Cawley, Morgan Dugan, Madison Gothberg and Lian Smithers took third.

Dugan added a seventh in the 800 and Hanna Dubiel finished seventh in the shot put.

Warwick Vets did not score at the meet. Bria McAloon had the top finish with a ninth in the hammer throw. Kim Buchanan added an 11th in the hammer, Ashley Petronelli was 14th in the javelin and Kaitlyn Johnston and Tess Bussick each had top-15 finishes on the track.

Moses, Tierney win as Hawks take title

Junior Lee Moses and senior Colin Tierney won multiple events as Bishop Hendricken racked up 35 medals en route to the Central Division crown. The Hawks finished with 201 points. Classical was second with 126. Toll Gate, Pilgrim and Warwick Vets finished seventh, eighth and ninth.

Moses won every event he was entered in, taking first in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the long jump. Moses also ran on Hendricken’s first-place 4x100 relay team. Tierney won a pair of distance events for the Hawks, taking both the 1,500 and the 3,000.

Three throwers also won events for Hendricken. Alex Cerbo took first in the shot put to go with a fourth in the hammer, Connor Hurst won the discus along with a fourth in the shot put and Shane Olson won the javelin.

The Hawks took 13 medals in individual running events. In the 3,000, Michael Potter, Dom Parlato, Grant Gauthier and Nick Celico followed Tierney to the line, giving the Hawks the top five finishers. Jared Boulanger added a fourth in the 800 and Matt Wilks took sixth in the 1,500. In the 400, Ian MacLeod took third and Levi Martin took fourth. In the 100, Power Kanga finished fourth and Nick Stravato finished fifth. John Cute took sixth in the 200. In the 110 hurdles, Gage Powell finished fifth and Dan Medici took sixth.

Three relay teams also took medals. Stravato, Cute, Moses and Ronnie Gaynor won the 4x100; MacLeod, Stravato, Joe Swift and Justin Mazzulla won the 4x400; and Boulanger, Potter, Patrick Hagerty and Tom Grizzetti took second in the 4x800.

Moses led the way in the jumps, but was joined in the medals by seven other Hawks. Justin Mazzulla took second in the triple jump, Ben Murphy took third in the high jump, Will Parmlee took fourth in the high jump, Stravato took fifth in the long jump, Powell took fifth in the triple jump and Andrew Salvadore finished sixth in the pole vault.

Along with Cerbo and Hurst’s performances, Hendricken won three medals in the throws. Chris Duxbury took second in the javelin, Chris Celona took third in the hammer and Ben Nelson finished fifth in the shot put.

Toll Gate topped the list for Warwick public schools thanks to 12 points from the pole vault. Max Procopio finished second and Joe Brosnahan took fourth. In the 1,500, Alex Pires and Anthony Hart finished just out of the medals in seventh and ninth.

Pilgrim’s Jacob Yang brought home two medals with a fifth in the javelin and a sixth in the hammer throw. The relay team of Eddie Cascella, Brandon Lawton, Garrison Potter and Joe Tocco took fifth in the 4x800.

Vets picked up a pair of fourth-place finishes for eight points. Levi Martin took fourth in the 400 and Brian Schofield finished fourth in the javelin. Ian Anderson was just off the medal pace in the 1,500 with an eighth-place finish.
