For the first time since 1997, the Pilgrim girls’ indoor track team is a class champion.

On the strength of four first-place finishes and solid depth, the Pats won the Medium Schools class championship on Saturday at the Providence Career & Technical Academy, out-pacing Barrington 107-93. Toll Gate was third with 68 points. On the boys’ side, Hendricken won the Class A title.

The Pilgrim girls were led by senior Rebecca O’Donnell, junior Melanie Brunelle and senior Maddison Caron, each of whom took gold. O’Donnell, the defending state champion in the long jump, won that event with a best of 17 feet, 2.50 inches. O’Donnell also won the 55-meter dash in 7.67 seconds.

Brunelle cleared five feet to win the high jump over Mt. Hope’s Kylie McPherson. Caron won the weight throw with a toss of 43 feet, 0.75 inches.

The Pats had 13 additional top-six finishes to rack up points. Along with her win in the high jump, Brunelle took second in both the 55-meter hurdles and the long jump. Kayda Phillip also placed third in the long jump, giving Pilgrim the top three finishers in that event.

On the track, Nicole Morales led three medalists in the 300 with a second place. Madison Stanley was fifth and Molly Lynch sixth. Danika Wayss placed in two distance events, taking third in the 1,500 and fourth in the 1,000. Bryana Mullin added a fifth in the 3,000, and Claudia DeMelo took fifth in the hurdles. The 4x400 team of Stanley, Wayss, Lynch and Morales took second, and the team of O’Donnell, Stanley, Lynch and Morales took third in the 4x200. In the throws, Caron added a third in the shot put to her title in the weight.

While the Pats flashed their depth to win the title, Toll Gate showcased some standouts of its own on the way to third place. Erika Pena won the 55-meter hurdles in 9.06 seconds and took fifth in the long jump. Heather Allstrom captured first in the 300 in 43.77 seconds, and freshman Ani Armenakyan won the shot put with a toss of 32-06.5.

Also for the Titans, Annemarie Martella and Ashley Chin finished second and third in the 55-meter dash, and Courtney Jacobsen finished second in the weight throw. Allstrom, Pena, Chin and Nora Hall teamed up for second in the 4x200 relay, with Katherine Lavallee, Sarah Lavallee, Debbie Jessop and Morgan Dugan combining for fifth in the 4x800.

Warwick Vets did not score at the meet, but its throwers were busy. Kimberly Buchanan had the top finish with an eighth in the weight throw. Bria McAloon took 12th and Kayla Bourbon finished 16th. In the shot put, Michelle Spremulli took seventh and Alyssa McCracken finished 12th.

La Salle edged Classical for the girls’ Large Schools crown and Smithfield won the Small Schools circuit.

Hawks roll on

Bishop Hendricken faced more of a challenge Saturday than it did in last week’s division championship, but still came away with another title. The Hawks won three events and tallied 112 points, better than second-place North Kingstown’s 87 and La Salle’s 75.

Standouts Colin Tierney, Lee Moses and Alex Cerbo set the pace for the Hawks with two medals each. Tierney won the 3,000 in 8:44.3 and took second in the 1,500; Moses won the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 0.25 inches and added a second in the 55-meter dash; and Cerbo won the shot put with a throw of 53-07.75, to go with a fifth in the weight throw.

The Hawks added four other distance medals. Michael Potter took third in the 3,000, with Dominic Parlato in fifth. Grant Gauthier grabbed third in the 1,500 and Jared Boulanger finished fourth in the 1,000.

Also on the track, Nick Stravato finished fifth in the 55-meter dash and Liam Vetter took sixth in the hurdles. Moses, Stravato, Power Kanga and Ronnie Gaynor took second in the 4x200 relay, just three-tenths of a second behind Central. In the 4x400, Chris Cambio, Ian MacLeod, Andrew Grady and Dylan DiLibero took third and in the 4x800, Matt Constant, Jared Boulanger, Grant Gauthier and Avery Ingegneri finished third.

Ben Murphy gave the Hawks a second place in the high jump, while freshman Kwity Paye finished fourth in the long jump.

In the throws, Connor Hurst finished fourth and Evan Nelson fifth in the shot put. Chris Celona finished fourth in the weight throw, with Eddie Barber in sixth.

Pilgrim, Toll Gate and Warwick Vets competed in Class B and each had a few solid performances.

Jeremy Morrissette and Frank Merlino both medaled for the ’Canes. Morrissette finished fifth in the 300 and Merlino finished fifth in the shot put.

Brock Massa led Toll Gate with a third in the 600 and teamed with Alex Pires, Patrick Rocchio and Anthony Hart for second in the 4x800 relay.

Sam Eleuterio finished sixth for Pilgrim in the 1,500 and ran with Chris Cahill, Sam Schoepfer and Andrew Picard for sixth in the 4x800 relay.
