Pats, Titans drop to 0-2 in D-II

Posted

Both the Pilgrim and Toll Gate football teams went into Friday searching for their first league win of the year, but both left empty-handed.

The Pats lost 52-22 to North Kingstown, while Toll Gate fell 29-8 to Coventry. Pilgrim has a non-league win over Smithfield, and is 1-2 overall but 0-2 in Division II-B. The Titans are 0-3 overall and 0-2 in D-II-A.

Facing an undefeated North Kingstown team that is suddenly one of D-II’s top teams, Pilgrim went down 23-0 after the first quarter and 32-0 at halftime. That essentially clinched the outcome, and though Pilgrim scored 14 points in the third quarter and eight more in the fourth, it was not nearly enough.

The Skippers got touchdowns from six different players, while Nick Chevalier and Corey Coogan each scored twice.

Toll Gate, on the other hand, was very competitive with Coventry, but couldn’t quite get over the hump.

The game was 0-0 at the break, and the Oakers only led 8-0 – in part due to a safety – heading into the third quarter. A 21-point fourth quarter finished the job for Coventry, however, as the Titans were unable to keep the game close.

Toll Gate’s eight points came on a pass from Joe Brosnahan to Jacob Moran, and Aaron Travers caught another pass from Brosnahan for the two-point conversion. Mike Nolan had two scores for Coventry.

The Oakers are now 2-1 overall but 2-0 in D-II-A.

It may get easier this weekend, at least for Pilgrim, as both teams still try to crack the win column. The Pats are traveling to Central for a 6 p.m. game on Friday, and the Knights have been scuffling as well. They are 1-2 overall, but 0-2 in the division and were shut out 19-0 by Shea last week – the same Shea team that shut out Pilgrim 28-0 two weeks ago.

Toll Gate will travel to Johnston on Friday for a 7 p.m. game. The Panthers are 2-1 overall and 1-1 in D-II-A, and defeated Mt. Hope this past Friday 43-6.
