It was a rough weekend for the city’s two Division III football teams.

Pilgrim and Toll Gate took the field on a rainy Saturday and were both handed lopsided defeats. The Pats lost 32-6 to Classical, while the Titans fell 42-0 to Middletown.

Middletown improved to 3-0, and sits atop Division III, while Classical is now 3-1 and in second place. Toll Gate is 0-3 in the division and now has been shutout in consecutive weeks. Pilgrim is 1-2.

The Pats fell behind 19-6 at halftime and never recovered, giving up a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters to fall well off the pace. Pilgrim’s one touchdown came on a 50-yard pass from James McKay to David McMullen in the second quarter. Jarrel De Los Santos caught two touchdown passes from Dan Karlin, who threw three touchdowns on the day. Amos Kpanan ran for over 100 yards on the ground.

Middletown took two interceptions back for touchdowns against Toll Gate, and it also added a fumble recovery touchdown.

Pilgrim and Toll Gate will try to right the ship this weekend. The Titans will host 1-2 Hope at 10 a.m. on Saturday, while the Pats will host 2-2 Narragansett Friday at 7 p.m.

Titans pick up a pair of wins

After a stretch in which it went 1-3-1 over five games, the defending Division II champion Toll Gate boys’ soccer team got back on the right track last week with two victories.

The Titans beat Cranston West 1-0 on Wednesday, then held off Coventry on Friday for a 2-1 win. Toll Gate improved to 6-4-2 on the season.

Against the Falcons, Alexis Beltran’s goal in the final few minutes of play broke a 0-0 tie and turned out to be the game-winner. Against the Oakers, Josh Sandin and Manny Pickering each scored. Kyle Brown made a combined nine saves in the two games.

Portesi makes final 16

Toll Gate freshman Viansa Portesi won her round of 32 match in the state singles tournament 6-0, 6-1 over Dala Kounkam of Woonsocket on Sunday. She exited in the next round, falling to Jamie Pine of the Lincoln School 6-1, 6-1. Portesi was the only Warwick qualifier.
