Pats capture Medium Schools title

Posted

The Pilgrim girls’ track and field team took home the Medium Schools title at the RIIL Class Track & Field Championship at the Providence Career and Technical Academy this weekend.

The Pats finished with 98 points, 10 ahead of cross-town rival Toll Gate. Those two squads finished well ahead of the rest of the pack, with Barrington earning third place with 52 points.

Toll Gate’s Courtney Jacobsen won the weight throw, with Pilgrim’s Chelsea Yang placing second, and Ani Armenakyan claimed the shot put. Pilgrim’s Ilana Perdereaux followed up with winning the high jump while Kayda Phillip was victorious in the long jump. Toll Gate’s Heather Allstrom placed second in the latter event.

Pilgrim’s Danika Wayss took third in the 3000 before outright winning the 1000. Nicole Morales placed second in the 300.

The Titans won the 55-meter hurdles behind Casey Gannon’s 9.01-second effort, with Pilgrim’s Claudia DeMelo finishing at 9.55 for second place.

Pilgrim’s relay team of Phillip, Morales, Madison Stanley and Emma Landroche grabbed key points by winning the 4x200. Pilgrim then finished second in the 4x400. The Titans finished four seconds behind Pilgrim for second in the 4x200, and just one second in the 4x400 for third.

The Bishop Hendricken swimming team won the Division I championship this weekend after defeating second-place Barrington by more than 100 points.

The Hawks finished with 522.5 points and saw some record-setting performances. Junior star Max Miranda broke his own record in the 200 individual medley, clocking in at one minute, 51.62 seconds. Miranda’s time of 59.82 seconds in the 100 breaststroke also beat a 16-year-old school record set by Rob Schotter, according to the Bishop Hendricken swimming official Twitter account.

The 200 medley relay team of Lucas Stencel, Marc Andrews, Connor Levine and Miranda won its event by more than seven seconds, and set a school record in the process. Stencel took second place in the 100 backstroke, and posted the fifth-fastest time (54.58) of any swimmer in program history according to @BHHSswim.

Hendricken will look to repeat as all-around champion when it travels to Brown University for the state meet at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

After dropping a road contest to Smithfield on Tuesday, the Hendricken basketball team rebounded with a 73-58 victory at East Providence on Friday night.

Hendricken built a 38-25 lead by halftime and used it to go to 12-2 on the year. Justin Mazzulla led the way for Hendricken with 18 points, but Billy Mueller wasn’t far behind with 17. Trevor Lawton also added 12 points.

Zack Veiga poured in 21 points for the Townies (11-4) to lead all scorers.

The Hawks finish out the season with two games at home. First, they welcome St. Ray’s (11-3) on Monday night at 7 p.m. before Cranston East (6-9) comes to town at the same time Tuesday night. Results for the game against the Saints were unavailable at press time.

The Warwick Vets girls’ basketball team finished out the regular season with a 40-22 home victory over Burrillville (5-10) on Friday night.

Emma Nason posted 12 points and Kat Raposo added eight. A strong first half helped carry the ’Canes, as they led 21-8 going into the intermission.

Vets (11-6) will be playing for a Division III crown in the postseason, but final seeding has yet to be determined.

The Pilgrim girls’ basketball team picked up a couple wins over the weekend in decisive fashion to move to 11-5 on the year.

The Pats welcomed Block Island (3-14) to Warwick on Thursday and defeated the Hurricanes 45-22. Kendra Tantimonico scored 12 points to lead the way for Pilgrim. Erin Plowman added nine and Mercedes Faust had seven.

Only three players scored for Block Island, but Julia Gasner had a game-high 13 points to pace the Hurricanes.

The Pats kept the momentum rolling with a 49-20 home win over Hope (0-17) on Friday night. Hannah Page exploded for 17 while Tantimonico and Alexia Martins each had eight. Hope’s Sahira Lora had 18 of her team’s points.

Pilgrim finished out the regular season with a home tilt against Classical (5-11), but results were unavailable at press time.

The Warwick Vets boys’ basketball team got 31 points from leading scorer Jake Gonsalves, but it wasn’t enough to upset Toll Gate on senior night as the ’Canes lost 60-53.

The Titans (10-6) had a balanced scoring attack with three players scoring in double figures. Austin Ouimette led the charge with 16, while Kyle McGuire had 12 and Damien Mendoza poured in 10.

Outside of Gonsalves, no other ’Canes’ player found their stroke. Jacob Isaac and Nate Ferri were the next closest with five points.

The ’Canes may have a chance to play on their home court one last time depending on playoff seeding, as they sit at 6-10 with the ninth-best record in D-III at press time.

The Titans possess the fourth-best record in the division to date and will take the No. 4 seed if Johnston (14-1) defeats Moses Brown (10-5) in the Quakers’ season finale.

The Pilgrim boys’ basketball team suffered its first Division III loss of the season on Thursday night, falling 65-48 to surging Chariho (14-2).

The Pats got the better of the Chargers earlier in the season, but that wouldn’t be the case in their season finale. An early 25-10 lead would be enough to carry Chariho to victory, getting 10 3-pointers across the board and 21 points from Dom Ciringione.

Big men Tyrone Weeks and Zach Johnson combined for 27 points, but Pilgrim’s guards couldn’t get much going. Matt Woods had eight points, but the other three guards combined for 10.

The Pats (15-1) await the D-III playoffs and currently lead Johnston for the No. 1 seed.

Despite having won four of its last six, the Toll Gate girls’ basketball team came up short at Central on Friday night, losing 43-20.

Toll Gate (5-10) couldn’t get much going offensively, and ended up trailing 23-9 going into the second half. Hannah McNulty led the charge with seven points, but the rest of the Titans struggled. Taylor Jackson, who scored three points, was the closest to McNulty.

The Titans will return to Warwick for a short two-game homestand to end the regular season. They host Central Falls (10-6) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., and will have senior night festivities Thursday night at 5 p.m. when they play Burrillville.
