Community College of Rhode Island retired director of athletics/physical education chair Joseph Pavone ’72 will receive the Amby Smith Lifetime Achievement Award from Words Unlimited, Rhode Island’s organization of sportswriters, sportscasters and publicists.

Words Unlimited will hold its 71st annual Sports Awards Banquet on Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Radisson Airport Hotel in Warwick. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Ticket cost is $35 per person and can be purchased from Words Unlimited President John Parente at 401-826-0555.

Pavone recently retired after more than 35 years at CCRI, where he began as assistant to the athletic director and chair of the physical education department. Pavone has served many roles at the college, including more than 30 years as an adjunct instructor in biology and physical education.

During his tenure at CCRI, Pavone was head coach of the men’s and women’s tennis and golf teams. As a tennis coach, he built a 26-7 record from 2000-03 while winning the NJCAA Region XXI Championship in 2000 and 2003 and earning Regional Coach of the Year both years. As the head golf coach, he led the team to a 14-6 record during the 2012 season.

Outside of CCRI, Pavone has served as physical education director at Cranston YMCA, coordinating all adult and children’s fitness programs, and assistant director of the highly successful YMCA Camp Massasoit. He served as the enrichment coordinator in the National Youth Sports Program for 17 years, overseeing health and wellness education and as a softball coach for underprivileged children. Pavone also served as the recording secretary for the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.

Pavone has been recognized by many organizations in the state for his work, including his support of the Rhode Island State Police and its fitness testing at CCRI. In 2004, he received recognition from the state for leading one of Rhode Island’s best employee wellness initiatives and workplace health fairs at the college. In addition, the Rhode Island Special Olympics acknowledged his work and support of its 2010 Flag Football League.

His love of sports was nurtured by the support of his mother Yolanda and father Joseph, and coaches throughout his life. Pavone is a 1970 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, 1972 graduate of Rhode Island Junior College and holds a Bachelor of Science and master’s degree in health education from Rhode Island College.
