Pawtuxet gazebo is target of Eagle Scout project

Posted

Philip Nemirow, a member of Boy Scout Troop 1 Gaspee Plateau, saw the perfect project for his Eagle Badge qualifications during his Pilgrim High Junior Prom.

Visiting the gazebo at Pawtuxet Park, he noticed the structure “was falling into disrepair.” He contacted the Pawtuxet Village Association that was pleased with his suggestion the troop could paint the gazebo. It was suggested he contact Home Depot for assistance. Philip explained Sunday, when the troop took on the project, that Home Depot would contribute materials if it was a Team Home Depot project involving some of their employees. The Home Depot employees couldn’t make it, but the materials did. Armed with scrapers and sandpaper, the boys tackled the job Sunday morning. Asked why they weren’t using power tools, Philip replied, “Where’s the fun of that?” However, after consideration, Rick Fredericks, an Eagle Scout with Troop 4 Gaspee who is a friend with Philip, returned with a belt sander.

Mayor Scott Avedisian stopped by to see the progress on his way home from church. He noted in recent years the association has made the gardens in Pawtuxet Park and The Gaspee Days Committee has renovated and improved the Aspray Boathouse.

“Now comes Philip and Troop I Gaspee to improve the gazebo.  What a great Eagle Scout project that benefits the whole neighborhood. Heartfelt thanks to Philip for his hard work,” he said.
