Paying peanuts for entertainment

Thirty years ago when I started feeding birds, the price of a 50-pound bag of sunflower seeds was about $10. Because of drought, the price went up to $25. I guess there has been a drought every year for the last 20 years because the price has never gone back down.

I now feed the squirrels and it only costs me $4 a month, instead of $25 a month. Squirrels may not be as pretty to watch, but they are much more entertaining. The way they fight and wrestle over the peanuts is very amusing; they often jump up on my windowsill and take the peanuts out of my hand.

Blue Jays and cardinals love peanuts, too, and come to my window whenever I feed the squirrels. The only problem with feeding squirrels is that they often will bury the peanuts and then come back to the window and rub their dirty noses on the windowpane, but it’s a small price to pay for all the entertainment they give you.
