Pennies for patients

Warwick Neck Elementary School held an orange and purple dress down day to commemorate the end of their month long Pennies for Patients drive. The drive began in February on the school’s 100th day celebration where they collected more than $100 to begin the fundraiser.

Collection boxes were sent home with the students and there was also a donation box at the front office. According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, that sponsors Pennies for Patients every year, Rhode Island had 200 schools participate and collectively raised $300,000.

Cathy Maguire, a 2nd grade teacher and the coordinator of the school Pennies for Patients drive said this year they focused on the positives, such as survivors and the increasing treatment success rate. Although leukemia is the leading fatal cancer for children ages 1 to 20, today, 90 percent of children survive. In 1960 the survival rate was only 4 percent.

All in all, Warwick Neck raised $2,375, the highest amount in the last four years.

This year the school passed out purple and orange beaded necklaces to all the students.
